When you are crafting your itinerary "On Your Own" vs. a cruise excursion, there are many variables you have to factor in.
(1) High and low seasons make a difference. You are charged what the market can bear. Seasons count--thus the prices might change during the year.
(2) A full van or bus that is booked can charge each guest less, than say, if only 2 or 4 people sign up on an "On Your Own."
(3) When you look at "On Your Own" prices dealing with the vendors, you must also factor in the round-trip transportation charges that occur to get you back and forth to the ship. The cruise ship excursion usually includes these in their prices.
So you must ask yourself the following:
(1) Do you want to go with a bus-load of 40 or more? I have found that unless you hang on to the tour guide's coattails, you miss half of the information presented by the tour guide.
(2) Are you claustrophobic? When they drop down those little isle seats and the van is over-stuffed, how do you feel?
(3) Are you okay with spending time on a beach as part of the tour--when you live on a beach in Florida or elsewhere? Would you rather spend your time learning about something else? Will there be stops to take the photos you want to capture? There are so many things to consider when planning your itinerary.
Personally, here's what I would consider. If there are certain things I want to see or experience, or, if I want to get back to the ship at a certain time... I would rather find a cabbie and another couple who most fit my itinerary plan and do "On Your Own" as a 4 or 6-person group and pay the price. Talk it up as you come off the ship with others who are waiting for a cab.
However, if the cruise tour fits with my "don't feel like walking that much" persona, and I would rather get a brief overview of most of the things on the island, I would book a cruise tour.
