Scuba diving and snorkeling are world renowned here, and second only to the Great Barrier Reef. Although many of the cruisers spend their day solely enjoying the Grand Turk Cruise Center, many other people come here specifically for the water activities. Adjacent to the main pier at the cruise center is a purpose-built excursion dock ready to help whisk you away to any number of water borne adventures including: wall diving, snorkeling, self-drive boating, deep sea and flats fishing, helmet diving, semi-submersible tours, snuba and power snorkeling, as well as clear kayaking.
Grand Turk has one of the most lush wall systems in the entire world. Healthy corals, diverse marine life and visibility that exceeds 100 feet often calls divers from around the world. The wall is a 10 minute ride from the beach, where your dive shop will conveniently pick you up. The reef called The Wall is located 0.25 mi/0.4 km offshore and drops 7,000 ft/2,170 m straight down. Between the shore and the reef, the water is mostly waist deep—perfect for snorkeling (even for beginners).
You can also take a day trip to dive or snorkel at Salt Cay. The most popular excursion just off Grand Turk is Gibbs Cay. Gibbs Cay is a small uninhabited island on the windward side of Grand Turk. Weekly picnic trips allow visitors to freedive for conch and learn a few techniques in making conch salad, snorkel with stingrays (a mini-version of Stingray City), bask on a virgin beach or even hike across the ridge for a breath of refreshing Atlantic Ocean breeze. The nature reserves of Gibbs Cay, Round Cay and Pennington Cay can be visited by boat.
There are also some great snorkeling spots and shore dives around the town.
